At Home Studio, Hawke's Bay

Spring Flowers, a psychedelic collective of four musicians with a touch of rock influence, sought a refreshed logo and brand identity. Known for their distinctive and eclectic stage presence, as well as their strong musical skills, they also needed studio photography to visually capture their unique sound and feel.

The logo redesign process was deeply rooted in the creative vision of band member Tamanui. He had originally hand-drawn a logo, giving it personal meaning, which I then digitised and refined using Adobe Illustrator. A key element of his concept was a stylised floral design, where each flower represented a specific colour linked to an individual band member. This colour system became a defining aspect of their identity, symbolising their unique personalities and contributions to the band's sound.

To further enhance the band’s aesthetic, I incorporated typography inspired by the psychedelic era - drawing from the fluid, organic letterforms and bold, expressive styles of the 1960s. This vintage yet vibrant influence helped reinforce the band’s nostalgic yet contemporary feel, aligning their visual identity with the psychedelic movement that heavily inspires their music.

This vision extended into their first photoshoot, where the colour identity system was brought to life through filtered lighting. In addition to photography, I took on the role of art direction and general directing - helping to shape the creative vision, guiding poses, and ensuring the atmosphere aligned with their psychedelic aesthetic. Working alongside my partner in crime, Nick, we carefully crafted the lighting setup to enhance the band’s unique energy. Using a combination of filtered light, props, costumes, a black backdrop, and a touch of post-production, we created striking band portraits that fully embodied their sound and spirit.

Beyond photography and branding - which included the refreshed logo, promotional imagery, and visual assets for both digital and print - I also designed poster concepts and a social media post for an upcoming gig where Spring Flowers were supporting Nick Herbison and the Locals at Common Room in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay.

Spring Flowers were an absolute pleasure to work with - Tamanui, Eden, Josiah, and Lillith brought so much creativity, warmth, and energy to the process. This project was not only a fantastic learning experience but also a lot of fun. I’m grateful to have collaborated with such a talented group of musicians!
